Hello,
Following the breach on the Robinhood app, and after I've read all the relevant information on IBKR website, I have some questions about IBKR's investor protection:
1) How am I, as an individual investor, protected in the unlikely scenario of a cyber breach?
2) Does the SIPC protection covers my account in case of a bug or a breach that is deleting my investments?
3) Does IBKR insure its customers from cases of breaches, cyber-attacks, bugs, or anything else that might take their holdings away from them?IBCS 2020/10/12 10:30:10
Dear XXX XXXX,
Thank you for contacting IBKR.
Customer securities accounts at Interactive Brokers LLC are not insured by FDIC. However, they are protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation ("SIPC") for a maximum coverage of $500,000 (with a cash sublimit of $250,000) and under Interactive Brokers LLC's excess SIPC policy with certain underwriters at Lloyd's of London for up to an additional $30 million (with a cash sublimit of $900,000) subject to an aggregate limit of $150 million.
For clients with over $250,000 in cash, we offer the Insured Bank Deposit Sweep Program which allows eligible IBKR clients to obtain up to $2,500,000 of FDIC insurance in addition to the existing $250,000 SIPC coverage.
This means that if client funds the account with USD 750'000 and does not invest it, then the first USD 250'000 are insured by the SIPC and the remaining USD 500'000 can be insured by the FDIC, if the client opts in for the Insured Bank Deposit Sweep Program.
Best regards,
